Areas
Normandy
Normandy is the area for Calvados, Cider Liqueur and also Pommeau a
c ider aperitif. Follow the cider route, (well signposted) and call in at the farms. Visit their cellars to taste and perhaps to buy. Visit Caen or Falaise, with their historic links with William The Conqueror. The pretty fishing village of Honfleur and the fortified town of Domfront are all well worth a visit. Sandy beaches are only a short drive away by car and slightly further away is the Normandy D Day museums at Arromanches. Mont St Michel and Bayeaux are also easily available for a day visit. The exclusive yachting resort at Deauville is worth a visit, as is Villers Sur Mer with its fine, clean sandy beaches.
From ultra-modern Le Tréport to the Mont-Saint-Michel, the Normandy coast exhibits an astonishing variety of landscapes. Here, the sea sculpts the cliffs with the pounding of its waves, creating a fantasy architecture; there, where its waters stretch on towards infinity, the sea comes to rest on vast expanses of golden sand that disappear and reappear with the tide, and the very air is fruit of new promise. This same sea is responsible for tempering the harsh rigours of winter, and for moderating the hot excesses of summer. The gentle skies look down and favour the 600 kilometres of coastline of this earthly paradise. While many people will head for the lively Normandy coast, the Norman countryside, with its golden prairies, its cool, wooded valleys and its beech and pine forests, remains a haven of peace and tranquillity. The little villages, leafy lanes and clear streams are the ideal setting in which to relax and rediscover the joys of nature.
